UTMSC-EDUCATION and TRAINING

General

The implementation of a UTM, within an actual transportation network that will be continuously upgraded based on more accurate traffic flow data, presents an unprecedented opportunity for universities to educate future transportation professionals on near-reality traffic flow simulators. Such capability allows students to better understand traffic flow theory models, route planning algorithms, dynamic traffic assignment models, signal optimization algorithms, incident management plans, evacuation plans, asset management, other. Specifically, the UTMSC will help in the development of new transportation professionals who will be well equipped to address issues related to catastrophic events either natural or man-made.

Academic Courses

Department with HS-related Curricula:  Civil Engineering
Name of Course:  Incident Management

      Course Content

·         Review of traffic flow theory (one week)

·         Review of microscopic and mesoscopic traffic simulators (one week)

·         Introduction to Dynamic Traffic Assignment Models (two weeks)

·         Review of vehicle routing algorithms (one week)

·         Review of Incident management procedures: traffic related incidents, security related incidents (two weeks)

·         Hands-on training on the VISTA software - Incident management module (seven weeks):

o        Case  study/paper on IM assigned

o        Security threat alert Case study/paper presented/assigned (area sealed off to traffic)

o        Evacuation model case study/paper presented/assigned

o        Truck routing case study/paper presented/assigned

·         Live presentation of case studies - last week

Resident expert(s) on HS issues: Nevillle A. Parker, Ph.D., P.E.; Kyriacos Mouskos, Ph.D.
Steps taken to develop HS-related curricula: See above “general” statement

Note:  The incident management course would be introductory.  Subsequently each of the

hands-on training exercises could be developed into specialized standalone

           courses.

Professional Development Certificate/Continuing Education Courses

Department with HS-related Curricula: CUNY Institute for Transportation Systems

Note:  Each of the bulleted topics above would be developed into professional

development certificate short courses.  Indeed, the CUNY ITS is already piloting a

web-based training course on the VISTA DTA.

program. We have such and such training and education program.
